Biography

Evan Tyler

Evan Tyler is an emerging intermedia artist working in photography, video, drawing, writing and performance. His work often incorporates performative public interventions that disturb the notion of the everyday, manifesting a spectacle in various urban and social spaces. Tyler employs humor and the absurd as entry-points into acknowledging the complex fabric of social behavior as well as the models, tropes and templates inherent of contemporary culture. His current works relate to metropolitanism and the urban uniform, examining the conversations, aesthetics and trends which occupy frenetic environments.

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Evan Tyler became interested in rapping and street art early in life. For over a decade he has been crafting experimental hip hop projects, pushing the envelope for strange lyricism. The Fine Arts Program at the University of Regina honed his multi-media practice and in 2008 he earned his Bachelors of Fine Arts (BFA), majoring in Intermedia. Tyler has exhibited his work at the Godfrey Dean Gallery, Yorkton, Sask. (2010), galleryDK, Toronto (2010), the University Club, Regina, Sask (2009) the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Regina, Sask. (2007), and gallerywest, Toronto (2011), Mercer Union, Toronto (2011)

Tyler currently resides in Toronto, Ontario where he is the owner and head of programming at 'gallerywest', a contemporary art gallery located at 1332 Queen Street West.
