Panel Discussion at OCAD
 Within/out Space

Auditorium
 6:00pm, Thursday April 28, 2011

A Symposium Presented by the Contemporary Art History MA Students of OCAD University

Engaged in an ongoing process of development, the metropolis constitutes a defining aspect of contemporary society and artistic production. Since the rise of industrialization, conceptualizations of the city have been accompanied by notions of anxiety, progress, consumption, isolation, communication and dislocation. Within/out Space will engage with these varying conceptions and examine the metropolis through the lens of artistic engagement.

Conditions and theories associated with urban space remain fertile ground for discussion among artists, critics, curators and theorists. This panel will engage with members of the Toronto artistic community whose work addresses issues raised by the metropolis.

Featured Panelists:
Evan Tyler
Flavio Trevisan
Keith Bresnahan

Light refreshments will be served.

I recently completed a video response to the song "Castor and Pollux" by Victoria-based musician Kathryn Calder. Kathryn is best known for her work with Canadian legands "Immaculate Machine" and "the New Pornographers" and has recently released her first solo effort "Are You My Mother?" on File Under Music. You can view the video on the File Under Music website at http://www.fileundermusic.com/site.html or click on the menu and scroll to the bottom of the video catalogue found in 'gallery'.

"Meat Bundles" is an illustrated narrative story I completed this year. Follow one man's strange and evocative journey from the butcher shop to the unstteling circumstance back at his apartment.

This exciting book combines drawings, photographs and words which in combination, potentially will make you uncomfortable and sick.

The "My Girls" catalogue is also now available for a low cost of ten dollars. The catalogue offers  the comprehensive series of images with  an artist statement . Also included is a creative essay by writer Carle Steel. To purchase one of your own, please send an e-mail request to art@evantyler.ca

This year I took on my first curitorial venture, bridging Saskatchewan artists together for the thematic exhibition "Plants and Machines". The exhibition has been selected by OSAC's "Art on the Move" program, which is to tour the province of Saskatchewan beginning in 2011.

Featured are a  diverse selection of works by Saskatchewan artists adressing the theme of technology and organics. In our modern world the borders of 'the natural' and the 'mechanical' are being blurred, negotiated and hybridized. These artworks explore the relationship of human to instrument, the idea of human as instrument, and the duality that exists between perceived notions of 'organic' and 'artificial'.

Of course you can always find new and exciting music and experimental projects at the Murder Lazer headquarters so make sure to click on www.murderlazer.blogspot.com
